Conization is a diagnostic and therapeutic method used to diagnose and treat abnormalities of the cervix.
During the surgical procedure, samples are taken from the cervix and pathological lesions (areas with pathological cells) are simultaneously removed, which could eventually become a source of cervical cancer. Conization clarifies the diagnosis in the case of an unfavorable cytological examination result. If the cancer is detected early, conization is often the only treatment needed without further therapy.
Basic Information
- The procedure is performed under general anesthesia
- The procedure takes about 15 minutes
- For the first 2-4 days after the procedure, bleeding of varying intensity (similar to menstrual bleeding) is often present, which should completely disappear within 2-3 weeks. It is recommended to use sanitary pads - not tampons.
- After the procedure, it is not recommended to bathe (showering is allowed), have sexual intercourse, or use tampons or insert anything into the vagina.
- It is not recommended to lift heavy objects or engage in sports and physical activities.
- If bleeding is heavier than menstruation, temperatures exceed 38°C, or there is a foul-smelling discharge after conization, it is necessary to contact your doctor.
